College Athlete Scholarships & Financial Aid for Student Athletes Sports

Athletic scholarships are largely regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

In the United States an athletic scholarship is a form of scholarship to attend a college or university awarded to an individual based predominantly on his or her ability to play in a sport. The individuals awarded the sport scholarships and for the institutions granting them (in terms of the form and value of the scholarships and the proportion of recipients who must ultimately earn degree.

All high school athletes wishing to compete in college at a Division I or Division II institution must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Information about the eligibility center can be found in the Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete.

The types of scholarships that may be offered range from most high school sports including archery, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, fencing, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, sailing, skiing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, wrestling, and volleyball.

Tip: Ask your current coach for more information and help. They may have a list of athlete scholarships to apply to and toll free phone numbers. More yet, your coach may help you with the profile of your athletic and academic qualifications and write you a letter of recommendation.

Keep your grades up in school. If your grades are high enough then the coach can get you an exempted academic scholarship or partial scholarship. Keep in mind that college coaches work hand in hand with the school's financial aid office.

Federal law requires athletic scholarships to be distributed in an equitable fashion among the sexes. So for you girls with athletic ability - there is plenty of financial aid available for you.

Title IX is a federal law that requires almost all elementary, secondary schools, colleges and universities to provide equitable educational opportunities to male and female students, including within their athletics programs. Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972 states that

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
